Here at HomCo Lumber and Hardware, we have built the foundation of our business on the knowledge of our experts. We believe that in order for us to help you complete successful projects, we can be nothing less than experts in our designated fields. Getting a chance to know a little bit more about your local experts gives you the ability to have confidence in starting a project with our team.
Our Fireplace Department Manager, Jason Brown, started his journey with us 16 years ago after moving across the country from Missouri.
While in graduate school at Northern Arizona University, he began his time at HomCo as a cabinet installer and after a few years moved onto the Building Materials Desk. After spending a little time in that department he moved into the fireplace world in 2008.
He enjoyed learning skills in the other departments but took a strong liking to fireplaces and stoves, “It’s never the same. There’s always a challenge, always something we have to figure out, always something that we have to do that’s different from yesterday. We are constantly coming up with new things.” Due to the nature of fireplace repair, installation, remodeling and cleaning, Jason and his team are always on their toes and are continuously growing their skill set. He loves the challenge and explains, “I like starting a project and having a happy customer at the end because all the components work like they are supposed to and exceeds their expectations and what they think they are going to get.”
Fireplace and Chimney Certifications
Jason not only is the Fireplace Department Manager, but he also completes a lot of the service work himself. Jason and his team are the only Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) certified chimney sweepers in Flagstaff, meaning that they are properly qualified for chimney sweeping and inspection of any chimney system. When it comes to an appliance that can be potentially harmful to your household, Jason doesn’t take any chances with his team and their education to provide thorough and safe chimney sweeping services.
With his additional National Fireplace Institute (NFI) certification, Jason is a specialist in woodburning, gas and pellet stoves/fireplaces. According to NFI, the entire process, “Planning and installing fireplaces, stoves and their venting systems requires experience, technical knowledge and skill. Numerous decisions — from proper floor protection to appliance sizing and placement to venting system compatibility and height-should all be made with the expertise of a specialist.”
Expert Advice for Choosing a Fireplace or Stove
A bit of advice for folks looking into adding a fireplace or stove into your home or looking into a fireplace remodel, “Make sure you are buying what you want and not compromising on the quality of the product. Realize that when you buy a product, especially a fireplace from someone, that you are entering a relationship with someone for the lifetime of that product.” It’s important to do research and to meet the people who will potentially be the ones installing your fireplace. You will be in a long term, business relationship for this large investment. Make sure they know what they are doing and have all the qualifications needed to do their job correctly and to keep your family safe.
DID YOU KNOW? A yearly inspection and chimney sweep should be completed in order to check for build-up, improper installation and water leaks.
The best time to do this is during June and July so issues can be spotted before the first cold night hits. The busiest time of year for HomCo’s Chimney & Fireplace department is when Flagstaff goes from Summer to Winter overnight in August or September. Don’t get stuck on a waitlist next year, get your inspections and chimney sweeps done early!
