Trends: Fluke or by Design?

Brought to you by HomCo Lumber & Hardware’s Design Showroom

Most of us know that a design trend is generally fleeting. So, what really is a trend? Is it cutting edge design? It is history repeating itself? Well, it’s a little of both.

When talking about trends, we often think about color. When it comes to design, a trend can be present before it becomes popular. Color committees promote future colors that are to be popularized years ahead of time through advertising. It is no coincidence when a popular color in fashion, décor, or cabinetry becomes successful. Urban legend tells us that colors are placed in the background of visual advertising to subliminally promote colors that will be introduced as “trends” in the future, often guaranteeing their success. With so many trends available to choose from, it is sometimes hard to know which will work for you, and which you should incorporate into your designs and space.

HomCo Lumber & Hardware is fortunate to be a dealer for MasterBrands, Inc., a cabinet company that is a pioneer in innovative ideas and trends. MasterBrands is the largest cabinetmaker in North America, and the parent company of several brands; four of which we carry. They are on the forefront of studying trends and forecasting popular colors, organizational solutions, and styles.

Today we see a huge interest in painted cabinetry, farmhouse sinks, and retro colors in design. However, questioning how long a trend will last, and when it will become outdated can make decisions complicated. Sometimes it is easier to start by asking yourself one simple question: How long are you planning to live in your home?

If you plan to sell your house in the next five years, consider classic styles such as subway tile, white or dark shaker cabinets, or tried-and-tested popular options for Flagstaff, such as knotty alder doors and granite countertops. Honey oak with a cathedral arch door style may not appeal to as large an audience of prospective buyers as you would like.

If you plan to live in your home for at least 10 years or more, you can choose finishes and a design that you love. If that is the case, choose the best quality you can afford. If you like the brass/gold details trend that has become popular again, then GO for it!

With so many finish options available, it is hard to know where to look for help and advice. Having an experienced cabinet designer is valuable when turning a complicated project into a seamless one. At HomCo Lumber & Hardware, our cabinet designers have over 25 years of combined experience in the design industry. Two of our designers graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northern Arizona University’s Interior Design Program. We have extensive experience with remodeling and new construction. We stay on top of trends and innovative ideas through continued learning and trade shows. This experience and knowledge give our clients the peace of mind they need to put their trust in us. There is no such thing as a standard design. Instead, plans and finishes should arrive from the culinary habits of how you use your space. Whether you decide to follow a trend or not, it is important to pick finishes you love, and that bring you joy.
